Terms
Last updated: 28 October 2026
1. Who we are
1.1 Wortwabe ("Wortwabe", "the service", "we", "us") is a website and web app for learning German, available at wortwabe.com and related addresses.
1.2 Wortwabe is a product of Viafacta. Viafacta is the brand under which Youssef Ibrahim develops software products. Viafacta is not a registered company. The legally responsible operator is Youssef Ibrahim, Egypt; a postal address for legal correspondence is provided on request via [email protected].
1.3 Contact: [email protected]. Legal notice (Impressum): wortwabe.com/en/impressum/.
2. What these terms cover
2.1 These terms apply to every use of Wortwabe: visiting the public pages, studying as a guest, using an account, using AI features, reporting issues, subscribing to update emails and, once offered, any paid plan.
2.2 By using Wortwabe you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.
2.3 Additional rules may apply to single features (for example a future paid plan or a competition). Where they differ, the feature rules apply to that feature.
2.4 The Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal data. It is a separate document and not part of this contract.
3. Who may use Wortwabe
3.1 You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. If you are younger, you may use Wortwabe only with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian, and the parent or guardian accepts these terms on your behalf.
3.2 You may not use Wortwabe if the law of your country forbids it, or if we have closed your account for a breach of these terms.
4. The service
4.1 Wortwabe offers, among other things: vocabulary study with spaced repetition (FSRS), gap checks, reading texts, contrast exercises, writing tasks, a reference dictionary, training games, statistics, optional AI feedback and optional audio. The exact features change over time.
4.2 Beta. Wortwabe is in a public test phase ("beta"). Features may be incomplete, change, move or be removed without notice. Errors are expected. You use the beta at your own risk to the extent permitted by law (see section 11).
4.3 No guarantee of availability. We aim for a working service but do not promise any level of availability. The service may be interrupted for maintenance, updates, technical problems, problems at our providers, attacks or reasons outside our control.
4.4 No guarantee of learning results. Wortwabe is a learning aid. We do not promise that you will pass an exam, reach a language level, get a certificate, be admitted to a university, get a visa or a job, or achieve any other result. Levels shown in the app (A1–B2, Goethe list coverage, statistics, streaks, XP) are study aids and estimates, not official assessments.
4.5 Not an official exam provider. Wortwabe is not connected to, endorsed by or certified by the Goethe-Institut, ÖSD, telc, TestDaF, any publisher or any university. Names of exams and word lists are used only to describe what our content covers.
4.6 Content quality. We write and check the learning content carefully, but it may contain mistakes (spelling, grammar, translations, articles, plural forms, conjugations, examples, pictures or audio). Dictionary data comes partly from third parties (see section 9). Always verify important information with an official or professional source.
5. Guest use and accounts
5.1 You can study as a guest without an account. Guest progress is stored only in your browser on your device. If you clear browser data, use private mode, change device or the browser deletes storage, guest progress can be lost permanently. We cannot restore it.
5.2 With an account, your learning progress can be synchronised to our cloud provider. You must give true information, keep your password and second factor secret and tell us immediately if you think your account is being misused.
5.3 You are responsible for everything that happens under your account unless you could not have prevented it.
5.4 One person, one account. Accounts may not be sold, shared or transferred.
5.5 Backups are your responsibility. Wortwabe offers an export of your learning data (Settings → Data & backup). Export your data regularly. Synchronisation, offline mode and conflict handling are complex; despite our care, data can be lost or overwritten (for example when several devices or tabs change the same data). To the extent permitted by law we are not liable for lost progress (see section 11).
6. AI features
6.1 Some features use artificial intelligence provided by third parties (currently Google Gemini) to generate texts, example sentences, explanations or feedback on your writing.
6.2 AI output can be wrong. AI can produce incorrect, incomplete, outdated, biased or inappropriate content, including wrong grammar corrections. AI feedback is a suggestion, not a teacher's assessment. Check important corrections yourself.
6.3 Do not enter personal data of yourself or others, secrets, passwords, health data or confidential information into AI features. Texts you send are processed by the AI provider (see Privacy Policy).
6.4 AI use is limited (for example a daily allowance for accounts). Limits can change. Unused allowance does not carry over and has no cash value.
6.5 If you use your own AI key in an advanced mode, you are bound by that provider's terms and you pay its costs. We are not responsible for costs or results of your own key.
7. Audio
7.1 Word audio may be generated with text-to-speech technology ("AI-generated voice") and is labelled as such. It is a pronunciation aid and may contain errors in pronunciation, stress or intonation.
7.2 Audio produced by your browser or operating system (speech synthesis, speech recognition in speaking exercises) is provided by your device vendor, not by us. Speech recognition only checks whether words were recognised; it is not a pronunciation assessment.
8. Your content
8.1 "Your content" means texts, words, sentences, notes, recordings and other material you add (for example in writing tasks, "My finds" or issue reports).
8.2 You keep all rights to your content. You give us a non-exclusive, free, worldwide licence to store, process, display and transmit your content only as needed to run the features you use (for example syncing, AI feedback you request, handling your report). We do not sell your content and do not use it to advertise.
8.3 You must have the right to the content you add. Do not add content that is illegal, infringes rights of others, contains malware, is hateful, harassing, sexual involving minors, or reveals personal data of others.
8.4 Issue reports and suggestions: if you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them freely to improve Wortwabe without paying you. Rewards such as the "Bug Hunter" badge are voluntary gestures without a legal claim.
9. Our content, third-party content and sources
9.1 Wortwabe's software, design, texts, example sentences, contrast sets, reading texts, exercises, the character "Nahla", logos and the name "Wortwabe" are protected. Unless stated otherwise, they belong to Viafacta / the operator. You may use them only for your own personal learning inside the service. You may not copy, scrape, resell, republish or use them to train AI models without written permission.
9.2 Sources and third-party material. Wortwabe uses the following third-party material under its licences:
- Dictionary data: derived from the German-language Wiktionary (de.wiktionary.org) via the wiktextract/kaikki.org extract, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0). The dictionary data files remain under CC BY-SA 4.0; this licence applies only to those files, not to the rest of Wortwabe. Short English/Arabic meanings written by Wortwabe that appear inside those files are also shared under CC BY-SA 4.0.
- Word frequency for choosing dictionary entries: wordfreq (Robyn Speer), data CC BY-SA 4.0; the frequency values themselves are not published.
- Pictures for vocabulary: Noto Emoji by Google, Apache License 2.0.
- Fonts: Inter, Fira Code, IBM Plex Sans Arabic, Literata, Plus Jakarta Sans and others under the SIL Open Font Licence; licence texts are published with the app.
- Spaced repetition: the FSRS-6 algorithm, our own port of the open-source ts-fsrs (MIT licence).
- Reference word lists: the official Goethe-Institut/ÖSD word lists (A1, A2, B1) and the vocabulary of common textbooks were used only as checklists to find gaps in our own content. Their texts, example sentences and translations were not copied. All meanings and example sentences in the course are written by Wortwabe.
- Generated audio: word audio generated with open-licence text-to-speech models (for example VoxCPM2, Apache 2.0).
- AI: Google Gemini for AI features, under Google's terms.
9.3 Trademarks of third parties (for example Goethe-Institut, Google, Anki) belong to their owners and are used only to describe compatibility or sources.
9.4 If you believe content in Wortwabe infringes your rights, write to [email protected] with details. We will check it and remove infringing content where required.
10. Rules of use
You may not:
- use Wortwabe in a way that breaks the law or these terms;
- try to get around limits, quotas, security measures, second-factor checks or access controls;
- access other users' data, attack, overload, scan, reverse-engineer for abuse, or disrupt the service;
- create accounts automatically, use bots, scrapers or mass downloads;
- abuse AI features (for example to produce illegal, hateful or harmful content, or to extract system instructions);
- misuse the issue-report system (spam, fake reports to gain badges or rewards);
- pretend to be someone else or to be connected to Wortwabe.
We may limit, suspend or close access, remove content and block reports or rewards if we reasonably believe these rules are broken. Where reasonable and legally possible we will tell you why.
11. Liability
11.1 Free service. Wortwabe is currently free. To the extent permitted by applicable law, it is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, uninterrupted availability or freedom from errors, bugs or viruses.
11.2 To the extent permitted by applicable law, Viafacta and the operator are not liable for:
- loss or corruption of learning progress, notes, texts, settings or other data, including data lost through browser storage clearing, sync conflicts, offline use, updates, bugs or provider failures;
- interruptions, outages, slow performance, errors, bugs or security incidents at our providers;
- mistakes in learning content, dictionary data, translations, pictures, audio or AI output, and decisions you make based on them (for example exam preparation, applications, travel, work or legal matters);
- failing an exam, not reaching a level, missing a deadline or any other learning or career result;
- costs of your own AI key, your internet connection or your device;
- damage caused by third-party websites, books or tools we link to;
- indirect damage, lost profit, lost opportunities or consequential damage.
11.3 What we cannot exclude. Nothing in these terms limits liability where the law does not allow it, in particular: liability for intent and gross negligence; for injury to life, body or health; under product liability law; for fraudulently concealed defects; or for breach of essential contractual obligations (in that last case, for slight negligence, limited to the typical damage foreseeable when the contract was made). If you are a consumer, your mandatory consumer rights remain unaffected.
11.4 These limits also protect our helpers, contractors and service providers.
12. Indemnity
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to compensate Viafacta and the operator for claims by third parties and reasonable costs that arise because you broke these terms or the law, or because your content infringed the rights of others, unless you are not at fault.
13. Paid plans (future)
13.1 A paid plan ("Pro") is planned but not available. Nothing on the website is an offer to buy until a checkout is active.
13.2 When paid plans start, separate conditions will apply (price, term, cancellation, payment provider, consumer withdrawal rights). Statutory withdrawal rights for consumers will be respected.
14. Ending use
14.1 In Settings → Account, choose Delete account where available. You can export first and choose to keep a local learning copy. If unavailable, contact [email protected] from your account email. Clearing browser data alone does not delete your account. Separate diagnostic, security and provider records may remain under their retention rules; this does not promise deletion of every record.
14.2 We may end the service or a feature, or close accounts, with reasonable notice where possible. If we end the whole service, we will try to give you time to export your data.
15. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms when the service, the law or our providers change. We publish the new version with its date on this page. For important changes affecting account holders we will notify them in the app or by email where possible. If you continue to use Wortwabe after a change takes effect, the new terms apply. If you do not agree, stop using the service.
16. Applicable law and disputes
16.1 These terms are governed by the law of the Arab Republic of Egypt. If you are a consumer living in the EU, you also keep the protection of the mandatory law of your country of residence.
16.2 The European Commission's online dispute resolution platform was discontinued in July 2025. We are not obliged and not willing to take part in dispute resolution before a consumer arbitration board, unless the law requires it.
16.3 If a provision of these terms is invalid, the rest remains valid.
16.4 These terms are available in German, English and Arabic. If the language versions differ, the English version prevails.
